Now Accepting Scholarship Applications for 2022

The Bertram L. Ashe Educational Foundation is pleased to announce that scholarship applications for the 2022-2023 academic school year are now available. The foundation annually awards 2-4 scholarships ranging from $350-$1,000 to selected qualified applicants. Applicants for Bertram L. Ashe Educational Foundation Scholarships must be Black/African American, US citizens or permanent residents, and currently in pursuit of an undergraduate or graduate degree.

The application deadline is November 25, 2022. We encourage eligible applicants to click here to download an application.

How California districts seek to recruit, retain Black teachers amid shortage

California districts are using pathway programs to hire more Black teachers and taking other steps to retain them.

A growing body of research shows that Black students who have at least one Black teacher growing up are more likely to graduate high school and enroll in college than those who don’t.

 

 

Yet

California still woefully lacks

Black teachers.

 

 

Experts attribute the lack of Black K-12 teachers in California to a number of barriers, including underrepresentation in teacher credentialing programs, as well as workplace discrimination that prompts some to leave the profession.
